Mississippi State Fires Head Football Coach Zach Arnett
Bulldogs Part Ways with Coach After Just One Season
Former Defensive Coordinator Compiles 4-6 Record, 1-6 in SEC
Mississippi State University has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after less than one season at the helm, athletic director Zac Selmon announced on Monday. The move comes just two days after the Bulldogs' final game of the 2023 season, a 24-22 loss to rival Ole Miss.
Arnett, a former defensive coordinator at Clemson and Syracuse, was hired by Mississippi State in December 2022. He inherited a team that had gone 4-8 the previous season and was looking to rebuild the program.
However, the Bulldogs struggled under Arnett's leadership, finishing the season with a 4-6 record overall and 1-6 in Southeastern Conference play. The team's only SEC win came against Vanderbilt, the league's worst team.
Mississippi State has now fired three head football coaches in the past four years. Joe Moorhead was fired after the 2019 season, and Mike Leach was fired in October 2022.
